About Me-Michelle Tollen-Stallworth

Michelle Tollen-Stallworth is an innovator and an educator in the field of natural hair. Michelle began her braiding career in 1989 and continued braiding throughout her undergraduate career. Upon receiving her bachelors degree, Michelle worked full time as a social worker for the city of Philadelphia and in 1996 went to cosmetology school. While in cosmetology school Michelle continued to braid hair part-time and fell in love with the idea of styling natural hair based on the extreme damage caused by chemicals, weaves, and braids.

Desiring a change from the monotony of braiding, Michelle began to seek out training in the field of natural hair and locs; training under Francine Toku (Afrigenix) and Jena Renee Williams (Kinki Kreations). In February of 2000 Michelle fused her braiding talents, natural hair training, and cosmetology license and opened Au Naturale Inc.

Michelle’s plans for the future are to continue to conduct workshops and trainings about black hair care and styling options. Currently a line of natural hair apparel is in the works, as well as an online storefront, hair videos, and natural hair training workshops that will expand the globe.
